Life Highlights (including last quarter's classes and Oh God Why Would You Do That To A Book: Adventures in Well-Intentioned but Fatally Flawed Preservation)... )

I MET NAOMI NOVIK and she was super cool... )

Reading-wise, I had a time for a grand total of a whopping THREE BOOKS!!! this quarter! I really needed some de-stressing, so I re-read Guards! Guards! (and teared up, just like I knew I would, even though it's one of the most gleeful and least sad Discworld books, which is precisely why I picked it. On top of, y'know, Sam), and finished off the Gentleman Bastards sequence.

Red Seas Under Red Skies was the one that got me to actually cry... )

Republic of Thieves: a wild Sabetha appears! )

And just a final note, Scott Lynch is just a fantastic goddamn human being. (Reading Locke may or may not be getting me to swear more.) He addresses mental illness (and I can tell you from personal experience a lot of this stuff is really, really necessary to hear), racism (and also here), and sexism.

...So. My New Year's Resolution was to be better about communication. Check Facebook and LJ completely every day, and leave LJ comments, emails, and phone calls unanswered for no longer than 12 hours. Optional goals included posting at least once a week and getting active on tumblr again. It was doable, I thought! All the second years say that the first quarter is by far the busiest and worst, I thought! ...And here we are.

I know I'm due for a hell of a life update (the holidays were busy, but a different kind of busy from my regular "WHYYYYYY did I ever decide to go to grad school"/"I love grad school and must LEARN ALL THE THINGS!"), but right now: A) I just had to choose next quarter's classes yesterday, so I might as well get down this quarter's while I've got them, and B) I'm kind of on fire about a certain book, and as I'm now almost done with the next one, I thought I'd get this review out while I can.

This quarter's classes: So You Want To Be A Cataloger and Sociology for Librarians... )

The Lies of Locke Lamora... )

P.S. If anyone 'round here knows where to get TLoLL icons, get at me! I only found this one after a goodly amount of google-diving; god only knows where it came from.
The COOLEST final project... )

Wow, I can't believe that the quarter is almost over. Ten weeks sure does feel shorter than 16! I thought I would hate the quarter system with a fiery passion, and while it still does feel a bit rushed, the fact that I only have two years to get in and out does mean that I'm thankful for the extra classes I can shoehorn in.

This quarter's classes, now that they're almost done... )

On the home front (Date Nights with R2, and Big Hero 6)... )

And that's about it for what's been going on with me, unless someone wants an extremely detailed run-down of virtual reference, or the future of digitization as a preservation technique, or a sort of sketchy outline of q qualitative analysis methods. XD

Foxglove Summer... )
Finally, I didn't get this up yesterday like I'd hoped, but in honor of Thanksgiving, I still would like to do a Things What I Am Thankful For:

So, classes!... )

Mopey weekend... )

The ensuing week; or, Latin is haaaaaard... )

In Nerd News, I finally finished The Name of the Wind... )

This week's meme is courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] mauvais_pli, an ASOIAF House meme. Short and silly, though, because I think I exhausted this week's eloquence ration on my classes and NotW.

Wow, I really have to work on updating more frequently. A lot has happened since my last post, both in terms of IRL doin's, and in terms of fandom stuff! Lessee here...

A's 16th birthday was a week ago last Friday... )

A little bit of drama, but also Pacific Rim... )

School stuff (stats and Berkeley)... )

"The Borders of Infinity"... )

Dodger... )

Not sure what to categorize these, just a couple of amusing and/or useful links that I've found floating around, and I think y'all might like:

- I've watched this one maybe 20 times, and literally been incapacitated by laughter every time, which I take as a good sign. Anyway, without further ado, I present: O Fortuna! (Watch the volume - it starts out really quiet, but then SURPRISE LOUD halfway through.)

- Guys, there's going to be a How to Train Your Dragon 2! I saw the first one only recently and had a very similar "omg why did I wait this long this is fantastic!!!" reaction to AtLA, only to a much lesser degree. But anyway, I'm psyched for this new one - speaking of AtLA similarities, Hiccup got hot in the ensuing five years or whatever. Who knew? (He's taken, though - thanks to tumblr, I now ship him and similarly-grown-up!Merida from Brave like whoa.)

- Speaking of stuff that's coming out soon, we just got the first trailer for Legend of Korra s2! I'm hoping they'll pull another AtLA, where the first season was good, and then the second season was FUCKING AMAZING, but then again, I don't want to get my hopes up too high or anything. It looks like this season is going to be creepier, though; or at least there will be more spirits and other assorted beasties, which I'm all in favor of.

For your meme-ing pleasure, this week's installment comes from [livejournal.com profile] ikel89, of the "pick six interests from my profile for me to blather about" type - just let me know if you want a set of your own!

Good Omens, Tithe, X-Men, Nostalgia Chick, graphic novels, and folklore... )

I spent this past weekend up in Sebastopol with the Clan (Les Mis and visiting P in Davis, mostly)... )

Dickens Pact... )

I've got two memes this time, both of them from my regular meme dealer, [livejournal.com profile] hamsterwoman. For the first one: ages.

18 vs. 22... )

Next up: icons!

Buffy, XMFC, B5, and AtLA... )

In the grand spirit of pass-it-on memes like these, comment with "meme me once, shame on you" for the ages one and "meme me twice, shame on me" for the icon one, or just plain ol' "meme me" for both.

EDIT:Oh, and apparently, a Tyrell Siblings-centric deleted scene from GoT s2 came out... )

The highlight of the week, socially speaking, was hanging out with hamsterwoman... )

...but also M (with bonus fandom!flailing)... )

First week of classes!... )

War for the Oaks... )

Oh, and one final note: apparently, Emma put together an 11-minute-long mini-film for War For the Oaks, which was directed by her husband, Will Shetterly, and can be found here. Ooh, I love book-as-movie trailers, especially when they're produced by the creators themselves! While I'm on the subject, for my own reference, here are the Crucible of Gold and Good Omens ones (heck, have another fun, if slightly less accurate, one). 'Course, I'm open to any recommendations, if anyone has run across any good ones. ;)

This past week hasn't been stellar... )

That isn't to say that life has been all doom'n'gloom, though... )

The one fandom thing that I've been able to make time for, that I was going to do come hell or high water, was the Doctor Who season premiere... )

It's been a while since I've done a meme, but I haven't really had the energy for anything long and/or intensive. So, now for something completely different! This is a bit outside of my usual fare, but I had fun doing it, and it resulted in an interesting story. Apparently, the movie of my life is going to be me as a Harley Quinn-esque supervillain meeting and falling in love with a Manic Pixie Dream Boy who later joins me in villainy, with whom I have a son we attempt to bring up to follow in our footsteps, but who ends up killing us. Oh, and cathedrals/churches/abbies/monasteries are involved somehow.

Put your iTunes on shuffle and create the soundtrack to your life... )

The last couple of days have been pleasantly busy... )

In other news, I finally finished the first Vorkosigan Saga book, Shards of Honor... )

I don't normally do links for the sake of links, but this one deserves sharing. I found this set of absolutely amazing Harry Potter icons over on [livejournal.com profile] _fandom_icons_, and I want each and every one of them, even those that aren't for my House (yes, I still identify as a Ravenclaw, even after Pottermore put me into Gryffindor). This has been a major incentive for me to finally make the jump to a paid account since, as they say on Teh Interwebz, I need these like burning.

It's meme time again! It's a more generalized life meme, not a character meme, this time around, but I found the questions unusually interesting/original, and, of course, I managed to slip in plenty of geeky stuff.

Here there be dragons!... )

Well, I'm halfway done with my final week of classes... )

Not much has happened this week, with one exception... )

Today M and I continued our lunch-and-movie (Inglorious Basterds) tradition... )

In other news, I finally finished the Dragaera anthology!... )

As I mentioned last time, I've squirreled away quite a supply of memes, but essay prompts are coming out, so the deluge might be somewhat slowed for the next week or two. For now, though, here are the first 25 of a 100-question general life meme that I picked up somewhere (Tumblr, perhaps?).

1-25... )

When I say this has been a hellishly rough week, I'm not exaggerating... )

Like I said last time, I've been doing memes to blow off steam. These two are the last ones I've got done, although I do have one or two more in the works.

This first one is...yet another randomized character meme! Yayyyy!

1. Hoban “Wash” Washburne (Firefly)

2. Martha Jones (Doctor Who)
3. John Granby (Temeraire)
4. Ellen Harvelle (Supernatural)

11. Angel (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
12. Catherine Morland (Northanger Abbey)
13. Thomas Raith (Dresden Files)
14. Adora Belle Dearheart (Discworld)
15. Nealan of Queenscove (Tortall Universe)

Finally, [livejournal.com profile] hamsterwoman tagged me in a meme. The rules are thus: You give 11 random facts about you, answer the questions I've asked, and then tag 11 people to answer the 11 questions you give. However, I don't know if anyone besides [livejournal.com profile] brit_columbia and the aforementioned [livejournal.com profile] hamsterwoman actually read this blog (if there are any lurkers hanging around, now is a perfect time to step forward!), so I tag them. XD

I'm fairly well settled-in at Cal, now (and my continuing search for good Chinese, Mexican, and sweet food)... )

The upsides and downsides of having horribly far away classes... )

I recently read an intervew with Temeraire author Naomi Novik that contained three good pieces of information and one very bad piece of information... )

The "ASOIAF as a musical" dreams I mentioned a few weeks ago have continued... )

TBH, I'm feeling kinda nervous about classes starting, so at this point I'm blogging mostly to relieve stress. I'm taking a pretty full load this semester, and while all of my classes are at least mildly necessary, I really don't want to screw up. Getting into the UCLA IS program promises to be difficult at best, and I'm going to need some kickass grades if I even want a shot. (Also, a contributing factor of my nervousness is that I'm planning on watching "The Reichenbach Fall," the last s2 episode of Sherlock later today, and given the inevitable subject matter and what reactions I've already seen, I'm fully prepared for at least a little bit of blubbering).

I'm typing this from my dorm in Berkeley... )

Wednesday's D&D game was H's first time in the DM's chair... )

In other news, I seem to have been honing my skills as a book dealer... )

In *other* other news, I have once again committed a meme... )

Hmm...that's all to report, for now. I plan on A) being pleasantly busy and B) taking advantage of the solitude before The Roomie gets back for the next few days, so I don't know whether I'll have time to post again before classes kick off on Tuesday.

Ugh. Stressful day is stressful, as they say in lolcat-land. Today is my TeleBears Phase 1, where I sign up for my most important classes, but as usual, there are tech and communication issues galore, on top of the usual oh-god-what-am-I-doing-ness that goes along with mapping out my academic and professional future. H, who is on her honeymoon hiking in Utah, has decided that now is the perfect time to start badgering everyone about her campaign via me, and I hate both badgering and being a badgeree. I also have to get down to the bookstore and see if they have the next Temeraire, because for some reason, the library sure doesn't.

First, TeleBears (signing up for next semester's classes)... )

Next, H and C are having a wonderful time backpacking in Utah (D&D moaning)... )

Yay Temeraire!... )

So, yeah, I'm enjoying my quasi-steampunk Napoleonic historical fantasy fusion! My Halloween plans are looking to consist of a bag of Dark Chocolate Hershey's Kisses, (possibly) another bag of Caramel Kisses, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, since Halloween takes place on a Monday this year, and I A) lack the makings of a costume, and B) have a seven-page paper on Doctor Faustus due that Friday. So here's hoping that y'all have a great Halloween/Samhain/Bonfire Night, depending on when I post next!
