Shipping Meme
Feb. 7th, 2011 04:37 pmOK, so I'm trying something new here. From time to time, I come across a meme somewhere (here on LJ, DeviantArt, what have you) that looks like fun. What usually happens is that I copy it and start filling it in, but I get bored or have a radical change of opinion halfway through, so it languishes on my hard drive, forever unfinished, only to be called up and started again from scratch every few months. But this time, I actually finished one! I had fun doing it, and finished in something approaching a reasonable amout of time. So if you ever see any good reading/writing/shipping/fanfic/fanstuff memes floating around the 'net, feel free to send a copy my way! As you can tell, I'm not picky.
And yes, I know it's supposed to be one question every day, but I got caught up in the moment and did them all at once. Ooops, I guess.
Day 01 - What is your current favorite ship?
Oh, jeez. Um… Seregil/Alec from Nightrunner, Midnighter/Apollo from The Authority, Steve/Wulf from Top 10, kinda Jack/Ianto from Torchwood.
Day 02 - What was your very first ship?
The first ship that I was conscious of shipping (shippity shippity ship ship ship!) was Raoul/Christine from Phantom of the Opera, but that was mostly because I was so blindsided by the massive hate that surrounds that pairing. Otherwise, probably Martin/Rose from Martin the Warrior. But I was about eight when I read MtW for the first time, so I don’t know if that counts as “shipping,” but I cried my eyes out when she died.
Day 03 - A pairing that needs to happen now?
Quentin/Eliot from The Magicians, because Quentin needs somebody to be a white(-ish) knight for, Eliot needs some focus for all that energy, and they both need a reason to be good people, because it seems like they can’t do it on their own.
Day 04 - The pairing with the most chemistry?
Um…all of them? The reason I ship these people is because they have chemistry.
Day 05 - The pairing with the least chemistry?
That really depends on how you define “chemistry.” If you mean “giving off the impression that they’re about to throw each other to the floor at any moment,” Steve/Wulf from Top 10, but mostly because they’re, y’know, old, and so have mostly gotten that out of their systems. But if you mean “working well together/obviously attracted to each other,” um…none of them? Why would anyone support a pairing with no chemistry?
Day 06 - The best kiss?
OK, that is not a fair question. Each ship has its own best kiss, but I absolutely cannot just pick one kiss out of all of them. For Apollo and the Midnighter, it was the one right after Apollo was un-frozen and un-virused. For Seregil and Alec, it was either their very first one on the cliffs of Plenimar, their “real” first kiss at Watermead, or their “holy shit you’re alive” kiss in Shadows Return. For Steve and Wulf, it was their very last one, on the last page of the comic. For Jack and Ianto, it was the “I came back for you” one at the beginning of the second season.
Day 07 - The most heartbreaking scene?
Ianto’s death scene from Children of Earth, for so many reasons. Aside from the obvious, that was the scene I was really counting on to provide final, once-and-for-all, incontrovertible proof of Jack’s love for Ianto, and it just failed. They are both actively dying, with only moments left to go before they’re parted forever. Ianto’s (almost) last words to Jack? “I love you.” Jack’s response? “Don’t.” Jack never said those three little words that Ianto needed, that I needed to hear. He promises not to forget him, yes, but not to love him. And that was the part that truly broke me down.
Day 08 - The pairing with the most baggage?
Again, Jack/Ianto. Peas’n’rice, but those two were screwed up. I mean, Jack had his leadership issues, his immortality issues, his Doctor issues, his family issues, and his 51st century issues. Not to be outdone, Ianto has his trust issues, his truth issues, his Lisa issues, his monogamy issues (which are really Jack’s monogamy issues), and his power/competency issues.
Day 09 - The most believable relationship?
Assuming you mean actors (because if I included literature, this one would take ages), I’d have to say Ten/Rose. That farewell scene? B’AWWWWW!
Day 10 - Why aren’t these two married in real life?
Because I think David Tennant already is?
Day 11 - What is your dream pairing?
I don’t really understand the question. Isn’t that what shipping, both in canon and out, is supposed to be about?
Day 12 - Who had the best wedding?
Apollo and the Midnighter. OK, so Midnighter’s silvery helmet thingy was a bit weird, but…just d’awww. These guys are usually literally knee-deep in blood and broken bodies and/or being pursued by powerful, evil forces that want to kill them for a variety of terrifying reasons, but just for this one day, the Carrier was aligned with the Sun, the rest of the team was invited, a truce was struck with the other groups, and these two finally got their reward for saving the world.
Day 13 - What is your favorite television pairing?
Either Jack/Ianto (despite the aforementioned heartbreak and baggage), Buffy/Angel (*sob*), Zoe/Wash (damn you, Joss Whedon!), or Simon/Kaylee (who are, so far, free from the Whedon Curse *crosses fingers*).
Day 14 - What is your favorite book pairing?
Oh, where to begin? Faramir/Eowyn (one is a quiet nerd with daddy issues, one is a renowned war hero and slayer of arguably the most terrifying creature in Middle-earth. Guess which is which), Maedhros/Fingon (if only, if only), Seregil/Alec (both as friends and more than friends), and James/Sirius (they work in my head, dammit!).
If we’re including manga, Ryo/Dee (my first-ever yaoi pairing) and Kurogane/Fai (in true CLAMP fashion, they were Meant To Be Despite All Odds).
If we’re including regular comic books and graphic novels, Apollo/Midnighter (pretty much the only good thing left about that series, even if Apollo has been mostly downgraded to Midnighter’s damsel in distress), Steve/Wulf (50 years, two continents, three wars, and counting!), and Kemlo/Annette (an idealistic cop [as well as a hyper-intelligent Rottweiler in a humanoid exoskeleton] and a [psychic] hooker with a heart of gold? What’s not to love?).
Day 15 - What is your favorite real life pairing?
Truthfully, my best friend and her husband. She needed someone calm and thoughtful like him to get her to slow down and take it easy for ten seconds, and he needed someone brave and ballsy like her to get him out of his horrible home situation.
Day 16 - What is the absolute worst pairing?
Let’s see… anything from Twilight, obviously. Most of the non-canon Harry Potter pairings (Snape/Hermione? Really?). Berkley/Ryo from FAKE, although I don’t think anyone ships this seriously. Erik/Christine from Phantom of the Opera (because of course all girls want serial killers). Muraki/Tsuzuki or Muraki/Hisoka from Yami no Matsuei (because of course all men want serial killers and rapists).
Day 17 - A pairing you thought would never work out, but did?
Ron/Hermione from Harry Potter. I seriously didn’t think that Rowling would go through with it.
Day 18 - What is the cutest pairing?
Either Seregil/Alec or Apollo/Midnighter. Both manage to be both snuggly and badass at the same time, which is awesome.
Day 19 - A pairing you’ve rooted for since the beginning?
Kurogane/Fai from Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle. This was partially just because CLAMP is CLAMP, but ever since Kurogane’s comments to Fai about living, I knew these two were meant to be.
Day 20 - The ‘can’t stand the sexual tension anymore’ pairing?
Ryo/Dee from FAKE. I believe at one point I was yelling “JUST KISS HIM, YOU MORON!” at the book. I’m sure Dee would’ve heartily agreed.
Day 21 - A pairing you like and no one else understands why?
First, James/Sirius from Harry Potter. It’s my big secret, that I support those two. I know that Rowling never in a million years intended this to be anything like canon, but come ON. After James’ death, Sirius was so distraught that he was not only incapable of forming new, meaningful relationships of any sort, but had to delude himself that James was still alive to maintain any semblance of sanity, and James hid Sirius from his psycho Death Eater relatives when Sirius scarpered.
Second, Maedhros/Fingon from The Silmarillion. Again, I know full well that it’s not canon and was never intended to be so, but the loyalty, the heroism, all of it points to an unusually strong relationship between the two. Maedhros, who was more or less okay with the Oath of Fëanor and the Kinslaying, balked at burning the ships specifically because it would mean being parted from Fingon. And Fingon, after this supposed betrayal that cost him his sister-in-law, in addition to a good many others among his people, went alone into what is more or less Hell to rescue Maedhros. Also, Maedhros didn’t go *really* bad until Fingon died, at which point he pretty much jumped off the sanity cliff.
Day 22 - A pairing you hate and no one else understands why?
Harry/Murphy from the Dresden Files. NO NO NO NO NO NO! They’re great friends, but they would make a terrible couple!
Also, I was never terribly fond of Ron/Hermione. I don’t hate it per se; I just never really got it. Maybe this should go under the “least chemistry” day, but whatever.
Day 23 - A crazy love triangle/quadrilateral that worked out great?
Ilar/Seregil/Alec (of the Type 4 or Type 10 variety, to be found here: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TriangRelations), in that both Ilar and Alec are interested in Seregil, but Seregil is only interested in Alec. And when I say that it “worked out well,” I mean that Seregil and Alec are together and happy, while Ilar is deservedly alone and reviled by pretty much everybody.
Day 24 - A crazy love triangle/quadrilateral that worked out badly?
Chane/Wynn/Osha, which technically worked out, only it worked out the wrong freakin’ way! Now, instead of the adorable Elven ninja who saved her from unimaginable evil, she seems to have ended up with Edward Chane, her psycho, controlling, vampiric stalker.
Day 25 - A pairing that was/would-be adorable, but could never work out?
Buffy/Angel. They were so perfect for each other, even while being together would kill both of them. That one day they got to spend together with Angel as a human also ranks on my list of most heartbreaking scenes.
Day 26 - A pairing that you hated and ended up loving?
James/Sirius. I was against any and all Potter shipping for quite a while, but I took a hiatus from both the books and the fandom, and when I came back, James/Sirius just kinda leapt out at me.
Day 27 - A pairing that you loved and ended up hating?
Kel/Neal from Protector of the Small. I was all for it, until it actually happened, when I realized that it wrecked their whole dynamic. Now I like Kel/Dom and Neal/Yuki much better.
Day 28 - A pairing that you will never understand?
Sirius/Remus. I know how popular it is, but why?
Similarly, Erik/Christine. I was truly amazed to find out that not only did the vast majority of the fandom support this pairing, but that they seem to think that Raoul is the villain. Who cares that Erik builds torture devices for fun and nearly blew up half of Paris?! He’s emo and writes music! That other jackass only willingly undertakes a terrifying and most likely fatal mission in order to rescue the woman he loves from probable rape and/or murder and/or eternal imprisonment!
Day 29 - What ship had the best proposal?
Hmm…probably George/Alanna from Song of the Lioness, if only because they’re one of the few pairings that *had* a proposal.
Day 30 - Your favorite ship forever and ever and ever!
All of them!
In news slightly more relevant to RL, I've got a Speech of Terror tomorrow, which is comprised of my two least favorite things: public speaking and confrontation. I have a tendency to mumble, as well as a tendency to shut up and agree with my opponent in order to avoid contention, neither of which will probably serve me very well tomorrow. Also, I'm not loving the crazy amounts of preparation I have to do for it, nor am I enamored of our professor, who is a complete debate geek. He was on the debate team all through high school and college, has a degree in debate, and has done nothing but teach debate for his entire professional career. It's obviously his pet topic, which intimidates the hell out of me. I enjoy learning English from an in-depth English geek, but that's because I love English, and it's nice to be able to delve deeply into a topic I enjoy so much. But with a topic like debate, which I'm only taking for a requirement, so much enthusiasm can be off-putting. He assumes a certain level of familiarity with the topic that his students just don't have; on our first day of class, I felt like I'd already missed about a week's worth of information.
